Snow Removal - Know Your Responsibility

As a business owner or residence of Dane County, WI, there are several city-specific responsibilities that you have regarding snow removal from your residence or commercial property. In this article, we review your responsibility to ensure you don't accrue citations or fines throughout the winter season.
City Regulations
Snow removal regulations vary from city to city. Reviewing your city's snow clearing responsibility will help you to stay worry-free at the start of the winter weather.
Madison - As a property owner in
Madison, WI, you are required to have the snow cleared from all public sidewalks by noon the day following the snowfall. This includes the public sidewalks that border your property.
Sun Prairie - As a property owner in
Sun Prairie, WI, snow/ice should be cleared within 24 hours. As a community member, there are some responsibilities that you have as well, like parking on city streets, mailbox placements, and more.
Middleton - As a property owner in
Middleton, WI, removing snow within 24 hours following the snow event is required. This includes sidewalks, fire hydrants, and more.

Cottage Grove - Village ordinance requires that in
Cottage Grove, WI all snow and/or ice is removed from sidewalks, sidewalk ramps, and multi-use trails within 24 hours of the end of a snow event. Failure to do so shall cause the work to be completed by the Village, with costs assessed to the owner & no prior notice will be given.
Oregon - Residents in the Village of
Oregon, WI must shovel sidewalks within 24 hours of a completed snow event. The snow must be cleared the entire width of the sidewalk. Property owners who do not clear their sidewalks promptly may be in violation of village ordinances and may face fines.
Mount Horeb - In the Village of
Mount Horeb, WI, the owner, occupant, or person in charge of each property shall clear the sidewalks, cross-sidewalks, or fire hydrants of snow and/or ice within 24 hours of the snowfall or formation of ice. Failure to do so shall cause the work to be completed by the Village, with costs assessed to the owner & no prior notice will be given.
Monona - In
Monona, WI the owner, occupants, or person in charge of the property must remove all snow and/or ice no later than 24 hours after the snow and/or ice cease to accumulate. For sidewalks that remain snow-covered, the Department of Public Works will clear the sidewalk, and the expenses will be billed to the owner of record for each property.
Deerfield - In
Deerfield Township, WI, the owner, occupant, or person in charge of each property shall clear the sidewalk of snow and/or ice before the hour of 5:00 p.m. on the day after snow and/or ice has fallen or accumulated. Each day of violation shall constitute a separate offense.
Cross Plains - In the Village of
Cross Plains, WI, the owner or occupant shall keep the sidewalk clear of all snow and ice within 24 hours from the time the snow and/or ice ceases to accumulate on the sidewalk. Each day a violation continues shall constitute a separate offense.
DeForest - In the Village of
DeForest, WI, snow and/or ice need to be removed from sidewalks following a weather event and should be kept clear. The village shall remove any snow or ice and the cost of removal will be charged to the owner of the property.
Mazomanie - Residents in the Village of
Mazomanie, WI must shovel sidewalks within 48 hours of a completed snow/ice event. The snow/ice must be cleared the entire width of the sidewalk. Failure to do so shall cause the work to be completed by the Village, with costs assessed to the owner & no prior notice will be given.
Blue Mounds - In the Village of
Blue Mounds, WI, sidewalks are to be cleared of snow by property owners by 10 am of the day that snow accumulates. If ice cannot be removed from the sidewalk, sand, salt, or a suitable substance should be used on the sidewalk until ice can be removed.
Black Earth - As a property owner in the Village of
Black Earth, WI, snow removal is required no later than 24 hours following the snowfall.
Marshall - Property owners in the Village of
Marshall, WI are to clear their sidewalks from accumulated snow and/or ice within 24 hours from the time the snow and/or ice ceases to accumulate on the sidewalk. The Village will charge owners who do not follow the snow removal ordinance for removal of the snow. Property owners may also receive a citation for violation.
Maple Bluff - Property owners in
Maple Bluff, WI are to clear their sidewalks from accumulated snow and/or ice. The Village will charge owners for the removal of the snow and/or ice.
Shorewood Hills - As a property owner in the Village of
Shorewood Hills, WI, clearing the snow and ice from public sidewalks is required within 12 hours of the storm. Property owners will also receive a citation for the violation.
